Professor Graeme
Hugo joined the Asian MetaCentre as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow
from 27 April 2006 to 12th May 2006.
Graeme Hugo was educated at The University of Adelaide, The Flinders
University of South Australia and the Australian National University.
He completed his Ph.D. in demography at the Australian National
University in 1975 and subsequently took up an appointment at Flinders
University. He has since held visiting positions at the University of
Iowa, University of Hawaii, Hasanuddin University (Indonesia) and the
Australian National University and has worked with a number of
international organisations (a range of United Nations agencies, World
Bank, World Fertility Survey, International Labour Office), as well as
many Australian and South Australian Government departments and
instrumentalities.
He is
the author of some 200 books, articles in scholarly journals and
chapters in books, as well as a large number of conference papers and
reports. His doctoral work and much subsequent research has dealt with
population issues in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. In recent
years he has worked extensively on Australian population issues and
problems. He has worked particularly on issues relating to implications
of demographic change for planning the provision of goods and services
for the private and public sectors.
In
1987 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in
Australia and is also a member of the National Population Council. He
is a member of the International Scientific Study of Populations
Committee on International Migration and the International Geographical
Union's Famine and Food Crisis Committee. He is on the editorial
advisory board of the International Migration Review. He currently
holds the position of Professor of the Department of Geographical and
Environmental Studies and Director of the National Centre for Social
Applications of GIS at the University of Adelaide. In 2002 he secured
an ARC Federation Fellowship over five years for his research project,
‘The new paradigm of international migration to and from Australia:
dimensions, causes and implications’.
